今天的笔记来自2015年一笔真题练习。
1. Conventional business wisdom is big on perfection: 商业常识推崇尽善尽美。
这里，wisdom就不能理解为“智慧，才智”了，conventional/received wisdom是一个固定表达，意思是the view or belief that most people hold 大多数人的看法；普遍信念；Conventional business wisdom也就是“商业常识”。
🌰 Conventional wisdom has it that riots only ever happen in cities.
人们普遍认为，只有城市里才发生暴乱。
⭐️做中译英的时候也可以用上这里的Conventional wisdom has it that……来代替generally, people usually think that，it is wisely accepted that等等表达。
big on表示strongly favoring or liking，“推崇”要比“喜欢”更能表达出strongly这层含义。
perfection表示the state of being perfect 完善；完美，这个我们都知道，我这里把它提出来是想提醒大家，我们中文喜欢用二、四、六、八字词来表达。我们翻译成“完美，完善”当然没错，但如果想让你的中文表达更进一步，我们就要学会去用二、四、六、八字词。比如：
🌰 The fish was cooked to perfection.
这鱼烹得恰到好处。
His performance was perfection.
他的表演真是炉火纯青。
2. We are constantly exhorted to show the pink of perfection: 常有人告诫我们做事要十全十美。
这里，exhort表示to try hard to persuade sb to do sth 规劝；敦促；告诫。
the pink of perfection 意思是“极致、完美”。英语中各种颜色所包含的文化含义，在平时注意积累，比如：
red herring：题外话、转移注意力的事；
red-blooded：健康的、强壮的；
red-letter day：节假日；
white lie：善意的谎言；
white knight：救星；
black tie：正式场合的；
yellow journalism：不负责任的报道；
out of the blue：出乎意料的；
into the blue：摸不着头脑的。
3. According to Graham Allcott, founder of a UK training company specialized in boosting productivity, people often look at tasks the wrong way：按照格雷厄姆•奥尔科特（奥尔科特在英国创建了一家以提高生产效率为目标的培训公司）的说法，人们看待工作的方式往往是错误的。
这里需要注意的就是同位语的翻译。如果同位语较短，就处理为定语，比如这里如果没有后面的specialized……，就可以翻译成英国一家培训公司创始人格雷厄姆•奥尔科特认为………；如果像这个句子一样同位语很长，就可以用破折号或括号将其与句子主要成分分开。
4. The work-life balance guru also recommends that you delegate the mundane parts of tasks that anyone can do.这位倡导在工作和生活之间保持平衡的大师还建议人们将工作中那些谁都能做的事情让别人去做。
这里，guru本意是“古鲁”，是指印度教或锡克教的宗教导师或领袖，这里是指a person who is an expert on a particular subject or who is very good at doing sth 专家；权威；大师。这里指代的是Graham Allcott。我们翻译的时候要注意通读全文，学会识别一篇文章中同一个事物/人的不同表达/称谓。
delegate表示to give part of your work, power or authority to sb in a lower position than you 授（权）；把（工作、权力等）委托（给下级），这里delegate后没有出现作为宾语的人，根据汉语的习惯应该补全，即“让别人去做”。
mundane表示not interesting or exciting 单调的；平凡的，这里也就是指那些谁都能做的工作。
5. However, many people find this difficult because they are wedded to the idea of delivering their very best. 然而，许多人觉得这很困难，因为发挥到极致的理念已在他们的脑海中根深蒂固。
这里，be wedded to表示believe firmly in an idea or theory and unwilling to change that belief坚信不疑。同样，学习这里的四字词表达方式。delivering their very best这里，deliver表示to achieve, provide or produce something兑现、实现；“very十最高级”表示强调。
6. Perfection is how they define themselves and to let anything out of their hands that isn't 100 percent goes against their sense of professional pride. 完美是他们对自己的要求，让任何不完美的东西从手中溜走，与他们的职业自豪感背道而驰。
这里需要重点注意define这个词，除了表示“给……下定义”，还可以表示to describe or show sth accurately 阐明；明确；界定；也就是展现自己的个性，向外界阐明自己的人生态度。
let something out of one's hands意思就是let something out of control 失控。
sense of professional pride表示职业自豪感。
7. People who are natural perfectionists tend to see not giving 100 percent as a failing. 生来追求完美的人往往认为，交不出完美的成果就等于失败。
这里，perfectionist指追求完美的人。可能是受英语中大量以ism、ist结尾的单词影响，“XX主义”“XX者”这一类表达出现得比较多，在一些翻译评论中被视为应该尽量避免的“翻译腔”。“为什么越来越多的人成为素食主义者?”这句话改成“为什么越来越多的人吃素?”似乎更加符合汉语的表达习惯。英语母语使用者也在倡导写作中要减少ism的使用，因此，译者在翻译时也应该尽量避免“XX主义”这样的表达。ism表达的是一个抽象的概念，翻译成汉语时可以采取具体化的方式。譬如本句中的People who are natural perfectionists也可译为“生来追求完美的人”。
8. It is therefore worth reminding yourself of the Steve Jobs quote:" Real artists ship".因此，你应该用史蒂夫•乔布斯的话提醒自己：“能出货才是真行家”。
这里，“Real artists ship.”是美国苹果公司联合创始人史蒂夫•乔布斯的名言，这一句是整句话的翻译难点。artist在这里不是指艺术家，而是泛指任何一个领域的高手：one who is adept at something；ship作为动词表示to send or transport sb/sth by ship or by another means of transport 船运；运输；运送。也就是说，能把产品交付到客户手里才是真正的大师。
9. Explain to your boss you can accomplish far more if you don't dot every i and cross every t.跟你老板说清楚，如果不要求你在每一个细节都做到一丝不苟，你可以取得的成绩可能会大得多。
这里，explain 在这里不应理解为“解释”，而是表示make something clear 说清楚一件事。
dot every i and cross every t直译为“把每个i上的点点上，把每个t的横划上”，形容注重细节、一丝不苟。与汉语一样，英语中也存在大量习语，所用典故多出自西方宗教、历史、寓言故事。在翻译英语的习语时，可不必拘泥于原文的表达，应抓住习语的内核，找出汉语中相对应的表达。
10. However, some managers' perfectionism is such that this appeal to reason will not wash.然而，有些经理执着于尽善尽美，因而诉诸理性是行不通的。
这里，perfectionism同样不要译为“完美主义”。appeal to reason表示a request to state your reason诉诸理性；sth won't/doesn't wash (with sb)表示used to say that sb's explanation, excuse, etc. is not valid or that you/sb else will not accept it （解释、借口等）对某人来说站不住脚，令某人不能接受。
