1.Finding and keeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge.(P4 Para.1)
2.In the 1950s,the Egyptian government wanted to build(build) a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area.(P4 Para.2)
3.Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples(temple) and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage.(P4 Para.2)
that were an important part...
4.After listening(listen) to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam,the government turned(turn) to the United Nations for help in 1959.(P4 Para.2)
5.Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and then made a proposal(propose) for how the buildings could be saved.(P4 Para.3)
how the buildings could be saved是how引导的宾语从句,作介词for的宾语。
6.Temples and other cultural sites were taken(take) down piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from the water.(P4 Para.4)
where they were safe from the water是定语从句,先行词是a place,关系副词where在从句中作地点状语。
7.Perhaps the best example is shown by UNESCO,which runs a programme that prevents world cultural heritage sites around the world from disappearing(disappear).(P4 Para.6)
8.If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation,the global(globe) community can sometimes provide a solution(solve).(P4 Para.6)
There comes a time when the old must give way to the new,and it is not possible to preserve everything from our past as we move towards the future.(P4 Para.1)
让步”;and后的分句中it是形式主语,to preserve everything from our past是不定式短语作真正的主语;as引导时间状语从句。
