(Positive)
must(一定是) > will(想必是) > would(大概是) > should/ought to(按理说是)
(Uncertain)
can(有时会) < could/may/might(可能)
(Negative)
can't(不可能) > won't(不会) > wouldn't(大概不会)
(Positive Assumptions)
You've been traveling all day. You must be tired.
The lights are on, so he must be at home.
Must + have done
She didn't answer the phone. She must have been asleep.
He got a full score. He must have studied very hard.
Should / Ought to + 动词原形
He should be here by now.
It's 10 o'clock. The store ought to be open.
(Uncertain Assumptions)
May / Might / Could + 动词原形
Take an umbrella, it might rain later.
He could be in the library. I'm not sure.
含义:可能(Might/Could 比 May 可能性稍小,但常通用)。
May / Might / Could + have done
She may have missed the train.
I might have left my keys at home.
(Negative Assumptions)
Can't / Couldn't +
He can't be at home. I just saw him downtown.
You couldn't be serious!
Can't / Couldn't + have done
She can't have stolen the money. She wasn't even there.
He couldn't have seen me. It was too dark.
例:He must be tired. (正) / He can be tired.
推测现在/将来:情态动词 + 动词原形 (must be, might go)。
推测过去:情态动词 + have done (must have gone, might have left)。
1. Mustn't vs. Can't
Mustn't:表示禁止(Don't do it)。
You mustn't smoke here.
He can't be in the office.
2. May not vs. Can't
He may not come tomorrow.
Can't:
He can't come tomorrow. He's on a business trip.
