A cold welcome
On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes’ time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted, ‘It’s two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!’ I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing.1、hand
作为动词时，有递交、传递的意思（传递东西多数时候会用到手）2、shout
shout得慎用介词，不同介词，或许只是一词只差，表达的意思可能差之千里。用介词to是表示大声喊，是为了让我听见，属于中性表达，用介词at是表示吼叫，是带有情绪的表达，多数是负面情绪的表达，比如生气、责备等。3、crowd
有趣的是，英语中量词常是“a ___ of”的形式：4、welcome
另外的表达方式：welcome back to + 东西/地方（欢迎回到...）也会被用来回应别人的感谢，相当于“不客气”而不是“欢迎”，即：“Thank you for your help.”
