Four common types of paragraphs:

1. Cause and effect

Each type of paragraph differs in its purpose. As you study, you should pay attention to the characteristics or features of each.

1️⃣ Cause and Effect Paragraphs 因果段落

Definition

They answer the question how did something happen, or what is the result of an action or event.

Features

- Explains the reason or reasons that something happened, focus on causes.

- Lists the results or effects of an action or events, focus on effects.

Example

If your topic is internet addiction, you might decide to write a paragraph on the causes or reasons teens become addicted to the internet. Alternatively, you might want to write a paragraph on the effects that internet addiction has on teens.

Definition

A comparison paragraph answers the question how are two things the same or different, or what different elements exist in one thing.

Features

- Compares similarities or differences between two things.

- Compares strengths and weaknesses of one thing.

- Compares advantages and disadvantages of one thing.

3️⃣ Classification Paragraphs 分类段落

Definition

A classification paragraph separates something into categories or groups.

Features

- Focuses on a specific topic (person, idea etc.), that can be classified.

- Describes the different categories of that topic.

- Includes descriptions or identifying characteristics of each category.

Tips

There’s often more than one way to classify a group of items. In a classification paragraph, the controlling idea tells the basis of the writer’s categorization.

Example

- Cars could be categorized by price, use or manufacturer.

- Movies could be characterized by type (genre), country or origin, or even when they were made.

When choosing the basis of classification, make sure that the categories are distinct and do not overlap.

Definition

A problem solving paragraph focuses on an interesting problem.

Features

- Usually focuses on a current problem.

- Presents the problem in the topic sentence.

- Offers one or more solutions to the problem.

- Includes a final thought to the problem or solution.
